IRVING — After earning their first American conference win on Thursday with a 1-0 road shutout of Temple, the Mean Green soccer team was handsomely rewarded on Monday, as the American handed out its weekly awards with UNT claiming three of the four superlative honors.
Junior goalkeeper Alina Arneth was named Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season after she tallied four saves in Philadelphia for her second career clean sheet. Junior forward Mia Bernard scored the game's lone goal in the 79th minute and was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week for her first conference superlative honor of her career after getting an honorable mention nod on Aug. 18 of this year.
Finally, freshman defender Lillian Vandiver was named the American Freshman of the Week after notching her first career point with an assist on the Bernard goal, while also playing a key role in the shutout defensive effort. It's her first conference honor of her young career. Senior defender Abi Major was named to the honorable mention list after a big defensive effort, which included clearing a free ball off the goal line to preserve the clean sheet after Arneth had been taken out of the play. It's Major's second career honorable mention nod and first this season.
"I'm really happy for Mia, Alina, Lillian and Abi on being honored by our conference this week," head coach John Hedlund said. "All four players have worked extremely hard this season, so it's well deserved."
UNT, which has dealt with numerous injuries this season and is starting to get healthy again, will next have a key road matchup at Memphis, which is currently ranked 9th in the country, on Thursday, Oct. 9.
