Robinson Era Begins Monday With Season Opener

DENTON – The Daniyal Robinson era at UNT begins Monday as the Mean Green men's basketball team host New Mexico Highlands at the Super Pit for its season opener.
Monday's tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPN+. The game is part of a double header with the North Texas women's basketball team who hosts Oklahoma Christian at 5:30 p.m. at the Super Pit.
A New Era
-Daniyal Robinson was hired on April 4, 2025 as UNT's new head coach.
-Daniyal Robinson became UNT's 20th men's basketball head coach.
-Daniyal Robinson comes to Denton from Cleveland State where he served as the Vikings' head coach from 2022-25 and compiled a 65-42 combined record over three seasons. His CSU teams twice finished runner-up in the Horizon League
-Daniyal Robinson has the second-most wins among active head coaches with three years or less experience.
-Daniyal Robinson led Cleveland State to three straight 20-win seasons including 23 wins last year. It was the Vikings most single season wins since 2011.
-Daniyal Robinson had a combined 41-10 (.803) record at home in his three seasons at Cleveland State. Cleveland State had the best home record among Horizon League teams during Robinson's tenure at CSU. UNT won a program record 17 home games last season and enters the 2025-26 season on a six-game home winning streak.
- Daniyal Robinson began his coaching career in 2000 at his alma mater Little Rock. UNT is his seventh school he's coached at. He spent nine seasons over two stints at Iowa State on staff under Greg McDermott, Steve Prohm and TJ Otzelberger.
A Whole New Roster
-UNT's entire roster is made up of newcomers.
-The Mean Green are one of six teams in the country who don't return a single scholarship or walk-on player from last season's roster.
-Four of North Texas' 12 newcomers are transfers from Cleveland State who came with new head coach Daniyal Robinson.
-Cleveland State transfer Dylan Arnett is the Mean Green's most experienced player on their roster. The senior has played in 92 career games and enters this season having made 72 consecutive starts.
The Matchup
-Monday will be the first all-time meeting between North Texas and DII New Mexico Highlands.
-The New Mexico Highlands Cowboys also have a new head coach as they hired Zach Settembre this offseason. Settembre previously served on Billy Gillespe's staff at Tarleton State. The Cowboys roster like the Mean Green's is also complete new.
-New Mexico Highlands competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They went 12-16 last season and 5-15 in conference.
