
Robinson Era Begins With 34-Point Win

The new Mean Green head coach played 11 of his 12 newcomers in the 34-point win. Sophomore guard Je'Shawn Stevenson led the way as he finished with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Sixteen of Stevenson's 18 came in the first half. It's his 18th career double digit scoring game.
Stevenson, who came with Robinson from Cleveland State where he previously was the head coach for the last three years, was one of four UNT players to score in double figures on Monday.
"New Mexico Highlands came in with a lot of energy, but I was really proud with how our guys played our brand of basketball, especially in the second half," said Robinson who won 65 games in three years at CSU. "We appreciate the fans coming out and it was a great first game here at the Super Pit."
As a team UNT finished with 21 assists on the night. Its most single game assists in five years for North Texas (1-0). They blocked six NMHU (0-1) shots and forced the Cowboys into 27 total turnovers. The most turnovers a UNT defense has forced in six years.
Along with Stevenson, Josiah Shackleford filled up the stat sheet with 16 points off the bench. It's the most points the senior has scored in a game at the DI level. Freshman guard EJ Horton scored 12 points in his collegiate debut. Also coming off the bench. It's the most points a Mean Green freshman has scored in their college debut in over five years. Senior guard Will McClendon scored 11 points, also off the bench, and added seven rebounds and six assists as he led UNT in the second half.
The Mean Green outscored the Cowboys 51-24 in the final 20 minutes.
North Texas' bench scored 48 of its 88 total points on Monday.
Robinson goes for win number two on Thursday as the Mean Green host Northwestern State at the Super Pit. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
