DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team defeated Northwestern State Thursday night at the Super Pit 80-53 to improve to 2-0 on the year under new head coach Daniyal Robinson.
The Mean Green (2-0) outscored the Demons (0-2) by 19 in the second half led by their defense and a variety of scoring from its deep roster. Four different North Texas players scored in double figures and on the defensive end they forced NSU into 16 turnovers.
"Love, love, love the depth of this team," said Robinson who played his entire roster Thursday. "Strength in numbers is something we talk a lot about with this team. I think it showed today. Northwestern State, credit to them, they showed a lot of look, pressed us, and made it challenging but we were able to figure it out and battle."
Senior Will McClendon came off the bench and scored a game-high 13 points after scoring 11 in the season opener. Junior David Terrell Jr. also scored a game-high 13 points on 4-5 shooting to go along with six assists. Senior Dylan Arnett added 12 points and sophomore Reece Robinson scored 11. The four guys who scored in double figures shot a combined 16-23 (.695).
Freshman EJ Horton came off the bench and fueled a second half run as he made three straight baskets and finished with eight points. Horton has yet to miss a shot so far this season.
Next up UNT has its first road trip of the young season as they head to Chicagoland to face Loyola Chicago at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on Sunday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on Marquee Sports.
