DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season as they begin the three-game trip on Sunday in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, against Loyola Chicago.
The Mean Green (2-0) will face the 2018 Final Four finalist Ramblers (1-1) at 4 p.m. on Sunday at a neutral venue, NOW Arena. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on KHYI 95.3 FM and on the Marquee Sports Network.
Following Sunday's game, North Texas will travel to Oregon State on Wednesday for the first true road game of the Daniyal Robinson era and then face Saint Mary's on the road Friday night.
Recapping Thursday's Win
North Texas improved to 2-0 on the year with an 80-53 home win over Northwestern State on Thursday. Will McClendon (13), David Terrell Jr. (13), Dylan Arnett (12) and Reece Robinson (11) combined for 49 points on 69.5 percent shooting in the 27-point win. UNT flexed its depth as its bench scored 41 points and through two games on the year is averaging 45 points per game.
The Matchup
Sunday will be the second time North Texas and Loyola Chicago have ever met. The Mean Green faced the Ramblers in 2021. They fell 57-49 at Loyola Chicago's Gentile Arena. UNT's new head coach Daniyal Robinson was Loyola Chicago's associate head coach under Porter Moser from 2013-15.
Chicago Kids
North Texas' 2025-26 roster features three players from Chicago: Dylan Arnett, EJ Horton and Je'Shawn Stevenson. None went to a high school closer than 30 miles of NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates. However, Arnett graduated from DePaul Prep, which is just five miles from Loyola Chicago's campus on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Edgewater neighborhood. Horton went to Wendell Phillips Academy in the Bronzeville neighborhood on Chicago's south side and Stevenson graduated from Robert Lindblom Academy in the West Englewood neighborhood also on the south side of Chicago.
Rebounding Guards
Through two games, four of North Texas' top 5 rebounders are all guards who are 6-foot-4 or shorter. 6-foot-3 senior Will McClendonn leads UNT rebounding through two games with 10.
Off to a Great Start
UNT true freshman EJ Horton has yet to miss a shot attempt or a free throw so far through two games. Horton is 7-7 from the field, 4-4 from deep and 2-2 at the charity stripe. He's averaging 10 points per game so far.
Aiming For a 3-0 Start
North Texas on Sunday is aiming for its second consecutive 3-0 start to a season. Since 2000, UNT has started a season 3-0 only four times.
