He is the fastest coach in program history to reach the milestone
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team (2-0) took a commanding lead in the first quarter and never looked back on its way to an 89-49 victory over Grambling State Friday night at The Super Pit.
North Texas started the game on a 21-0 run, holding the Lady Tigers scoreless until a Jamirica Roberson layup ended the stretch with 1:26 left in the quarter. Aysia Proctor scored all of her eight first-half points during the run, while seven different UNT players recorded points before Grambling.
"It was an outstanding first quarter," head coach Jason Burton said. "That's not to say we didn't play well the rest of the game, but we can't have games where we come out and turn the ball over 28 times. I've talked about the versatility of this team and the ability for multiple people to step up and score the ball and you saw that tonight."
Proctor continued to lead the Mean Green offensively, finishing with a team-high 18 points on a 7-of-10 night from the field. Tionna Lidge also reached double figures, posting 14 points. However, it was a full team effort as each of the 11 UNT players that checked into the game tallied at least five points.
North Texas' defense also swarmed Grambling's offense the entire 40 minutes, holding GSU to 22% shooting on the night. It's the first time UNT has held an opponent under 25% shooting since the matchup with Grambling in 2023.
With the victory, Burton became the fastest head coach in program history to win 50 games, doing so in 68 games since taking over prior to the 2023-24 season. His success at The Super Pit is notable, with a 30-3 record at home during his tenure. Friday's win marked the 13th consecutive win at home dating back to last season, which is the second-longest home winning streak in program history, only trailing the 15 straight wins from 2001-02.
North Texas will look to move closer to that record its next time out against Nelson University on Thursday, Nov. 13.
