DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team had its six-game winning streak and 11-0 home record snapped Saturday night as they lost 54-50 to UTSA at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (16-5, 7-2) trailed by as many as 14 points to the Roadrunners (10-11, 4-5) but came back to get the deficit within two in the game's final minute. With 10 seconds remaining North Texas' Atin Wright, who has bailed the Mean Green out before with late game heroics, shot what would have been a go-ahead 3 but it rimmed in and out.
Still UNT had one more shot at it as a would-be game tying alley oop with two seconds remaining was deflected away by UTSA's Johnivius Smith preventing Brenen Lorient from catching the pass.
"Need to give a ton of credit to UTSA and coach Claunch," said head coach Ross Hodge. "The game rewards the tougher team and tonight they were more consistently the tougher team. They beat us at our own game."
The Mean Green's Grant Newell led his team with a season-high 14 points as he was 6-6 from the floor. Lorient added 11 points off the bench and grabbed seven rebounds.
Wright played all 40 minutes in the loss and finished with 10 points.
UNT next up has its quickest turnaround in conference play as they travel to UAB to face the Blazers Monday night in Birmingham. North Texas beat UAB 78-75 at the Super Pit on Dec. 31.
