DALLAS - The UNT swimming and diving team closed out the American Athletic Championships on Saturday by winning three more medals to add to their week-long tally and narrowly missed out on a fourth-place finish to take fifth with a total of 1160 points to close out a stellar week for the Mean Green.
UNT claimed three individual medals on Saturday, highlighted by senior Shaena McCloud's silver medal in the 100 freestyle with a school-record time of 49.24 to edge out her teammate Indra Vandenbussche, who finished with a bronze medal with a 49.75.
The Mean Green also got a bronze in the 200 butterfly from senior Kailey Turner, who narrowly missed a program record with her time of 2:00.13.
UNT ended up with nine medals across the four-day championship, including its first three conference championships as a member of The American (team diving, 3-meter springboard and 1-meter springboard) and its first diving conference championships in program history. Prior to this year, it had been six years since the program's last conference championship.
"I'm really proud of the way our team fought through the whole meet," head coach Brittany Roth said. "Our athletes really stepped up to each challenge throughout the season, and I couldn't be prouder of their tenacity throughout the week. I'm so proud of the work they have put in, setting themselves up to perform at their best this week. We saw so many career-best performances throughout this week, and that is the ultimate achievement that these athletes show up for day in and day out. This group has a special place in my heart, and this is a team I will cherish throughout my career."
Junior Kamryn Wong was named the conference's Most Outstanding Diver after helping the Mean Green to the Team Diving gold and sweeping the springboard events, and associate head coach/diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan was named the conference's Diving Coach of the Year.
"Words can't describe how proud I am of this group," O'Callaghan said. "This whole week has been amazing and truly special. They all stepped up, they all fought and accomplished so many great things. From (Michaella Rhodes) sneaking into A-final on 1-meter to Valeria, Amelia and Mackenzie crushing it in 3-meter B-final and all moving up to Kam and Syd going 1-2 on 1-meter and the team event just dominating to kick things off. It feels a bit surreal at the moment, this year will always hold a special place in my heart. And I'm excited to build on this momentum as we refocus on to NCAA Zones."
