DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team beat Tulane Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit 76-66.
The Mean Green (17-6, 8-3) and Green Wave (13-11, 7-4) entered the game in a tie for third place in the American Athletic Conference standings but a season-high 11 3-pointers by North Texas and a strong rebounding performance propelled them passed Tulane.
UNT was led in scoring on Saturday by Brenen Lorient who finished with a team-high 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Guard Johnathan Massie paced the Mean Green early as he had 13 points in the first half and matched his single game career high with three 3-pointers. Atin Wright added 14 points and forward Grant Newell finished with 11 as he made a single game career high seven free throws.
Latrell Jossell matched Massie and Wright with three 3-pointers.
UNT's 11 made 3-pointers is tied for the most they've made in a game this season.
"We have a ton of respect for coach Hunter and his team," said head coach Ross Hodge. "They've had one of the most efficient defenses in our league and put you in tough situations. Our guys had a really good understanding of how we wanted to play and applying it to the game itself."
With the win on Saturday North Texas now sits alone in third in the AAC standings and improves to 12-1 at home this season. They were 11-4 at home last season.
Next up for the Mean Green is a road game at Rice on Tuesday. UNT beat the Owls in Denton, 81-59, on Jan. 8
