With the win, second year Mean Green head coach Ross Hodge picked up his 19th league win. It's the most conference wins in a North Texas head coach's first two seasons, surpassing Tim Jankovich who was hired in 1993.
Tuesday, UNT (18-6, 9-3) was led in scoring by Atin Wright who finished with a game-high 20 points, his fifth 20-point game of the season. But it was late buckets and stops by Johnathan Massie to hold off the Owls (12-13, 3-9) Tuesday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.
"We have the utmost respect for (Rice) coach Lanier and his staff and we knew it wasn't going to be easy in their building, but our guys responded so well when they went on that late run," Hodge said. "I'm so proud of this group."
Tuesday was a wire-to-wire win for the Mean Green but Rice never trailed by more than 11 and tied the game at 61 with 1:15 to go. With 23 seconds left Massie went to line, having missed his last six free throw attempts, but the senior sank both shots to give UNT a two-possession lead.
UNT finished the game against the Owls with a season-high 17 assists. The second-most assists the Mean Green have had a game in the Hodge era.
Up next for North Texas is an eight-day break before hosting Tulsa Wednesday night at the Super Pit.
