IRVING — The UNT men's basketball team earned five American Athletic Conference All-Conference awards, announced by the league Tuesday. The conference's 13 head coaches voted on the awards.
Mean Green senior guard Atin Wright and junior forward Brenen Lorient were both voted first team all-conference. It's the first time in their respective careers they've been voted to a first team honor. This is the sixth year in a row North Texas has had a player voted first team all-conference — Conference USA and now the AAC — and it's the first time since 1988 UNT has had two players in the same year be voted first team all-conference.
Additionally, Wright was voted to the AAC's All-Newcomer Team and Lorient was voted as the league's Sixth Man of the Year.
Joining Wright and Lorient with an all-conference recognition was senior forward Moulaye Sissoko. The Mean Green's starting center was voted AAC Most Improved Player.
Wright finished the regular season averaging a team leading 15 points per game. He made 83 3-pointers during the regular season, which was the third most in the AAC and shot a league leading 41.7 percent from deep. Wright ended the regular season with the nation's second-best free throw percentage at 93.5 percent, less than a half of a percent lower than the leader.
Seven times this season Wright scored 20 or more points against league opponents. In his final home game at the Super Pit, Wright scored 42 points on just 18 shot attempts in a 75-64 win over Charlotte. It was the most points scored by a UNT player since 2018 and tied for the fifth most points scored in a game in program history. His so far 83 made 3-pointers are the seventh most single season 3-pointers in program history.
Lorient has been UNT's second leading scorer, averaging more than 12 points per game. He has scored 15 or more points so far 12 times this season. A versatile forward, Lorient has impacted winning in a variety of ways on both ends of the court. He leads UNT in blocks with 36 and is third in assists with 40. He's shooting 55 percent from deep and has become a fan favorite with his high-flying dunks.
The junior has had numerous big games but his first career double-double was a breakout performance as he scored 20 points, had 13 rebounds and five blocks in a win over Temple on Jan. 22.
Lorient, who has come off the bench in every game this season, led all AAC reserves in scoring, rebounds, offensive rebounds, blocks, minutes played, free throws made, field goal percentage and 2FGs made. He ranks third in the AAC among reserves in assists and steals.
With the exception of 3-pointers, which he's never attempted one, Sissoko has set single season career highs in every statistical category this year. He's more than doubled his scoring average from last year. He's grabbing on average two more rebounds per game and he's on pace to have one of the best single season field goal percentages in program history.
Sissoko and Florida Atlantic's Tre Carroll split the voting for the most improved player award.
UNT begins the 2025 American Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday in the quarterfinal round. They are the 13-team tournament's No. 2 seed and will face the winner of Temple versus Tulsa at 6 p.m. CT from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
