FORT WORTH, Texas — The UNT women's basketball team's time in the American Athletic Conference tournament ended in the semifinal Tuesday night as South Florida defeated the Mean Green, 58-48.
UNT fell behind early, trailing 31-16 at halftime despite holding USF to 12-of-36 (33.3%) from the field.
North Texas came out of halftime hot, going on an 11-0 run from the 7:12 mark of the third quarter to the 3:35 mark to cut the Bulls' lead to 33-29. The Mean Green continued charging in the fourth quarter, getting within one point on an Ereauna Hardaway layup with 7:38 to go.
"I'm certainly proud of our fight in the second half," head coach Jason Burton said. "I thought we came out in the second half and played with aggression, played with a purpose. We probably should have started the game out that way as far as how we guard the point guard and that's on me. We should have come out aggressive and set the tone."
North Texas' comeback was aided by its defense that held USF to 24% shooting over the final three quarters after allowing the Bulls to shoot 50% in the first quarter.
However, the Mean Green were unable to get over the hump as USF immediately responded with an 8-0 run of its own. Vittoria Blasigh's 3-pointer with 1:40 to go put the Bulls up 52-44 as they pulled away in the final moments.
UNT went 11-of-24 (45.8%) from the free throw line in the contest, including a 2-of-7 mark from the line in the fourth quarter. The Mean Green also struggled on the perimeter as Jaaucklyn Moore converted their lone 3-pointer of the night with 21 seconds left.
Tommisha Lampkin led North Texas with 10 points and 14 rebounds, the 36th double double of her career.
The Mean Green will now await their postseason tournament fate following the winningest season in program history.
