Men's Hoops Begins AAC Tournament Friday
3/13/2025 11:58:00 AM | Men's Basketball
North Texas (23-7, 14-14) earned a double bye in the tournament with its second-place finish in the conference standings. The Mean Green will face the winner of Temple (17-14, 9-9) and Tulsa (12-19, 6-12) at 6 p.m. CT from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth Friday night. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPNU.
UNT, which joined the AAC last season, is aiming to win its first AAC Tournament championship in program history and get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021 when they won the Conference USA Tournament title.
This year the Mean Green had one of their most successful regular seasons in program history. Their 23 wins during the regular season were tied for the second-most in program history. Their 14 league wins were the third most in program history. UNT earned five all-conference honors including two first team all-conference recipients: Brenen Lorient and Atin Wright. It's just the third time in program history the Mean Green have had two first team all-conference honorees in the same season and the first time since 1988.
Friday in the quarterfinals North Texas will either face a Temple Owls team who they split their two meetings with this season or a Tulsa Golden Hurricane team that UNT beat 63-44 in their only meeting this season. Temple is the reigning tournament's runner-up as they reached last season's title game as its 11 seed.
The American was founded in 2013. This will be its 10th ever men's basketball conference championship — there was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID — the 2-seed has won the AAC Tournament four times, more than any other seed.
Temple and Tulsa face Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.
