FORT WORTH — The UNT men's basketball team advanced to the American Athletic Conference semifinals with a 77-59 win over Tulsa Friday night at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
The Mean Green (24-7), the 13-team tournament's No. 2 seed, were led in scoring by senior Atin Wright who poured in a game-high 24 points. The most he's scored in a conference tournament game in his career. He also scored his 2,000th career point in the win Friday.
North Texas trailed the 10th seeded Golden Hurricane (13-20) 31-26 at the half but a 21-3 run early in the second half put the game in UNT's advantage. North Texas pushed its lead to as many as 22 points.
"I want to give credit to (Tulsa) coach Konkol and his staff and team," said head coach Ross Hodge. "We have a lot of respect for them. I wasn't happy with how we played defensively in the first half, but we were able to get stops and force turnovers early in the second half and that settled us in."
North Texas forced 16 Tulsa turnovers Friday. It's the most turnovers the Mean Green have forced in a conference tournament game since the 2012 Sun Belt quarterfinals.
The Mean Green will face the winner of UAB and East Carolina in the semifinals Saturday at 4 p.m. CT in Dickies Arena.
