Mean Green Fall In AAC Semifinals

FORT WORTH — The No. 2 seed UNT men's basketball team was eliminated from the American Athletic Conference Tournament in the semifinal round Saturday with a 66-56 loss to No. 3 UAB at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
The Mean Green (24-8) trailed the Blazers (22-11) by as many as 16 points in the second half and was able to get the deficit down to as few as four points with 2:52 remaining but a last second desperation 3-pointer by UAB's Ja'Borri McGhee on the Blazers' next possession felt like the final blow.
"A lot of respect to (UAB) coach Kennedy and his team," said head coach Ross Hodge. "We just didn't play well enough to win tonight. Too many first half turnovers."
North Texas and UAB were tied at 17 towards the end of the first half but the Blazers closed the game on a 13-3 run to take a 30-20 lead into the break. UNT had nine first half turnovers to just two in the second half.
The Mean Green were led in scoring by senior Atin Wright and junior Brenen Lorient who each had 12 points. Lorient also grabbed 11 rebounds Saturday, seven of which offensive boards. UNT outrebounded the Blazers 39-37 on Saturday.
