DENTON — Riding a league leading five-game winning streak, the UNT men's basketball team hosts Wichita State Monday night with a chance to clinch a top three seed in the 2025 American Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Mean Green (21-6, 12-3) and the Shockers (17-11, 7-8) are scheduled to tip-off from the Super Pit at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network and on ESPN2.
Monday will be the 41st all-time meeting between North Texas and WSU who from 1957-75 were in the Missouri Valley Conference together, however, it will be the first time they've met in Denton since Feb. 22, 1975.
UNT has won three in a row over the Shockers, including its 58-54 win at Wichita State on Jan. 29. But WSU's season has made a 180-degree turn since then.
Immediately following their four-point defeat to the Mean Green, the Shockers, who owned a 1-7 conference record at the time, went on a six-game winning streak that included an 84-79 overtime home victory against league leader and nationally ranked Memphis on Feb. 16. Five of the six wins were against opponents who at the time of the game were ahead of the Shockers in the AAC standings.
The once 1-7 Shockers who were in 13th place enter Monday's contest in Denton with a 7-8 league record and sit in seventh place with three games to go and a chance to finish as high as fifth by the end of the season.
The Mean Green locked up a top four seed in the 2025 AAC Tournament with their 71-61 win at Florida Atlantic Thursday night. Teams in the top four earn a double bye and start the 13-team conference tournament in the quarterfinal round on March 14 from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
With a win over the Shockers on Monday, North Texas secures a top three seed in the upcoming tournament. With three games remaining before the tournament, UNT is still in the running for a regular season championship and No. 1 seeding but is one game back of Memphis. Furthermore, Tigers hold the tiebreaker over the Mean Green.
Monday is the second to last home game for UNT. The Mean Green are 13-1 at the Super Pit this season. The program record for most single season home wins at the Super Pit is 15, set by the 2007-08 team. After Monday UNT hosts Charlotte Thursday night for the home finale. They end the regular season on March 9 at Temple.
Dude Perfect's Sparky, a UNT alum, will be at Monday night's game. He will be meeting fans on the concourse of the Super Pit prior to tip.
