WACO, Texas – Cierra Simon set two program records as she helped lead UNT softball to a 3-2 victory over Sam Houston in the consolation final of the Baylor Invitational at Getterman Stadium.
"Cierra had a good day," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "She had the triple in the third inning whenever we were down 2-0 and that was a big hit in a big moment for us. Cierra is one of the faces of our program and she's been a great example for our team."
In the first, Simon broke the program record with her 51st career stolen base before she deposited her ninth career triple in the left-center field gap in the third inning to plate two runs and tie the game. She would come home to score on an error later in the frame to give UNT a 3-2 edge. Simon and Riley McNemar were each named to the Baylor Invitational All-Tournament team.
North Texas (16-4) recorded its 11th comeback win of the season against the Bearkats (7-12) as starting pitcher Anneca Anderson (W, 7-2) tallied her third complete game of the season.
"Anneca threw well this week," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "She's had six appearances in a row that have been really good and the pitching, overall, threw really well this weekend."
Since starting against Bradley on Feb. 16, Anderson owns a 4-0 record with one save, 2.16 earned run average and 18 strikeouts over her past six appearances while holding opponents to a .162 batting average against. She spun seven innings with four strikeouts versus Sam Houston on Sunday.
Freshman Taylor Platt posted her first multi-hit performance as she finished 2-for-3 with one run scored.
"It was a good week for us," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "I feel like we were a little tired. We need a few days off to rest and regroup then get back to work on Tuesday."
