DENTON — The UNT men's basketball team hosts Arkansas State in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament Sunday at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (25-8) and Red Wolves (25-10) are scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPNU.
North Texas and Arkansas State were both in the Sun Belt Conference together from 2000-2013 and in the Southland Conference together from 1982-87. Sunday's second round matchup will be the 42nd all-time meeting between the two programs but the first since 2013, which was the Mean Green's last season in the Sun Belt. This will be the first time these teams have ever met in a national postseason tournament, but UNT is 3-2 all-time versus the Red Wolves in conference tournament games. In 2007 North Texas defeated Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game, 83-75.
UNT on Sunday hosts an A-State squad that has won a program record 25 games this season, a Red Wolves record that had previously stood for more than 30 years. With a win over Arkansas State the Mean Green will capture their 26th win of the year, which would be the second most in UNT history.
The Mean Green on Wednesday in their 75-64 win over Furman in the NIT First Round broke the program record for single season home wins with 16.
Arkansas State like UNT is led by a second-year head coach. Both the Red Wolves' Bryan Hodgson and North Texas' Ross Hodge have broken their respective program records for most coaching wins in first two seasons.
The winner of Sunday's second round matchup will face either Oklahoma State or SMU in the quarterfinal round next week. The Cowboys and Mustangs face each other Sunday at 2 p.m. CT in Dallas.
