Softball Sweeps Memphis

DENTON, Texas – UNT softball secured its first American Athletic Conference series sweep of the season with a 6-1 victory over Memphis Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.
"Honestly, we had to sweep this weekend just to get ourselves back into the thick of things and to stay as close to [Florida Atlantic and South Florida] as we could," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "So the sweep is what we needed, so I'm glad we did it."
The Mean Green (22-10, 5-4) tallied six or more runs in every game of the series against the Tigers (14-18, 3-6) and improved to a 16-1 record this season when hitting the six-run mark.
Cierra Simon drove in three RBI to match her season high while Tatum Sparks recorded her third straight multi-hit game with two runs scored. Kailyn Bear collected two RBI via a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly.
Starting pitcher Skylar Savage (W, 10-5) threw 128 pitches over seven innings and only allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts. She finished with six walks, including four in the first inning, as she totaled 45 pitches in the opening frame.
"We need to get her going and sometimes she's just got to pitch herself out of things," DeLong said. "I'm glad we stuck with her [in the first inning] and I'm glad she adjusted. Beyond the first inning, she just got better as the game went along so that was good to see out of her."
Savage registered her 25th career complete game Sunday to move past Stacey Underwood (2015-17) for eighth place on the UNT career leaderboard.
"I knew that going into this game I just needed to compete and throw strikes," Savage said. "In the first inning I kind of lost it but I found myself and my team had my back the whole way."
