Softball Suffers Series Loss

DENTON, Texas – Mean Green softball dropped a 5-3 loss to Charlotte at Lovelace Stadium Sunday after overcoming deficits in the second and fifth innings.
"Charlotte swung the bat [well] and we knew that coming in," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We should have scored more but credit to them, they played well, and got the job done and we didn't."
North Texas (17-7, 1-2) lost its opening series of conference play for the first time since 2018, the year before DeLong arrived in Denton, after the 49ers (13-12, 2-1) tallied runs in five of seven innings on Sunday.
Leadoff hitter Tatum Sparks finished 2-for-4 and holds the team lead with 11 multi-hit games for the season. She scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Sparks spoke about having a selective approach at the plate against Charlotte and how it led to her success.
"I was really just trying to relax, have some good at-bats and swing at something I know I can handle," she said.
To open American Athletic Conference play, Sparks collected a .667 batting average (8-for-12) in the three-game series with six runs scored, two home runs and one double.
Riley McNemar drove in a two-RBI single in the second to score Madison Conley and Ausha Moore.
Starting pitcher Anneca Anderson (ND) threw three innings before Kayleigh Smith (L, 1-2) took the circle and spun three innings of her own. Over her past eight appearances, Smith has only two walks after facing 94 batters with a 1.85 earned run average.
