CARROLLTON, Texas - The UNT men's golf team wrapped up play at its host event, the Maridoe Intercollegiate, on Tuesday and was led by freshman Blake Keen, who tied for sixth and beat several nationally ranked players at Maridoe Golf Club.
The Mean Green moved up a spot to finish seventh at 35-over par, just one shot back of sixth-place Baylor and two shots back of fifth-place UNCG. The top four teams - Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and Alabama - entered the tournament ranked in the top 15, with the top 3 being ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Keen shot an even-par, final-round 72 to finish the event at 2-over par for a strong finish as the freshman has been battling injury the entire spring season.
"It was a breakout week for Blake Keen," head coach Luke Calcatera said. "He has been battling with back pain and making a lot of sacrifices to be able to play this spring. To see him play really solid in tough conditions against a great field is really promising going in to the rest of the spring. Our team fought really hard this week, and I believe that we're really close to putting it all together."
Joe Stover had the second-best round of the day for UNT with a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 30th with teammate James Tureskis at 11-over par.
UNT will be back in action on April 12-13 at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas.
