BOCA RATON, Fla. – UNT softball travels to No. 25 Florida Atlantic for a three-game showdown atop the American Athletic Conference standings beginning Friday at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
The Mean Green (28-13, 10-5) have won eight of its past nine league contests including completion of a sweep over UTSA on Sunday to position itself in second place in The American. North Texas scored a total of 33 runs against the Roadrunners to mark its third-consecutive league series with over 30 runs after it did so against Memphis and Tulsa.
The nationally ranked Owls (34-7, 13-2) have held a position on the NFCA national coaches' poll for each of the past seven weeks and have yet to drop a conference series this season. Most recently, FAU took two of three games from South Florida (30-12-1, 9-5-1) at Joan Joyce Field to help the Mean Green move a half game above the Bulls.
UNT leads the series 26-16 against Florida Atlantic while head coach Rodney DeLong holds a 7-2 mark over the Owls after he won each of the past three series. Four of the six games between current FAU head coach Jordan Clark and DeLong have been decided by fewer than two runs and the run differential stands at 20-11 in favor of North Texas.
In nine career games versus the Owls, senior Cierra Simon holds a .321 batting average as she enters the weekend 9-for-28 with six runs scored and three stolen bases. On April 28, 2023, Simon had a night to remember at Joan Joyce Field when the then-sophomore broke a 1-1 tie with a solo home run in the eighth inning before recording the final out on a diving catch at shortstop.
