Mean Green become first AAC team to win series over Owls
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Mean Green softball registered a 9-1 win in five innings over No. 25 Florida Atlantic Saturday and locked up its American Athletic Conference series over the league's top team.
Elizabeth Moffitt and Tatum Sparks carried the offense with five and three RBI, respectively, while starting pitcher Skylar Savage (W, 13-6) spun her ninth complete game of the season.
UNT (30-13, 12-5) are the first team to win the first two games of a conference series at Joan Joyce Field since 2023 when the Mean Green clinched the series with back-to-back victories over FAU (34-8, 13-4) en route to a sweep.
Moffitt opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first before Sparks drove a three-run home run over the left-field wall in the second inning for an early 4-0 lead. In the third, Cierra Simon collected a leadoff single before she advanced to second on a stolen base, third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single from Kailyn Bearpaw.
In the fourth inning, Moffitt delivered the death knell with a grand slam to score Taylor Platt, Sparks and Riley McNemar and take a nine-run lead. The Owls scratched across an unearned run in the fifth after a throwing error but were not able to extend the game.

Savage was effective as she engaged her defense to the tune of seven flyouts and five groundouts, including one double play, while she added two strikeouts. Over five innings, she allowed three hits and four walks on 91 pitches.
With the victory, head coach Rodney DeLong secured his sixth 30-win season at North Texas and the seventh in program history overall. This season's team became the second fastest to reach 30 wins in UNT history after DeLong led his 2021 squad to the mark in 40 games and matched the pace of 43 games from 2022.
