Simon collects her second career conference player of the week nod
IRVING, Texas – Senior Cierra Simon was selected as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after she led Mean Green softball to a series victory over No. 25 Florida Atlantic, the league announced Monday.
For the week, Simon posted six hits including a clutch three-run home run against the Owls on Friday night to lead UNT to a 4-0 win in the series opener. She registered a .462 batting average with four runs scored, three RBI and two stolen bases.
The award marks Simon's second career AAC Player of the Week selection after she notched her first on April 22, 2024. She became the seventh player in program history with multiple conference offensive player of the week awards and the first since Lacy Gregory (2017-20) accomplished the feat on March 4, 2019, when North Texas was a member of CUSA.
Simon collected her 200th career hit in the fourth inning Sunday's game and became the first player in UNT history with 200 hits, 100 runs scored, 100 RBI and 50 stolen bases. The leadoff single also extended her conference game hitting streak to 20 games.
With the win, Simon and fellow senior Kailyn Bearpaw are the sixth pair of North Texas teammates to win conference player of the week awards in the same season and second-ever to win in back-to-back weeks. The only other Mean Green duo to win player of the week honors in consecutive weeks was Stephanie Cranmer (2004-05) and Susan Waters (2004-07) on March 7, 2005.
UNT hosts UAB for its penultimate home series of the season beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. from Lovelace Stadium. The series will be broadcast on ESPN+ with game two Friday at 6 p.m. and game three Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets HERE.
