Mean Green post third conference sweep of the season, remain in third place in The American
DENTON, Texas – UNT softball completed an American Athletic Conference series sweep of UAB Friday night after it won 5-4 in game one and 7-3 in game two.
The Mean Green (33-14, 15-6) have now won five of its last six conference 'games and advanced to 12-4 on the season at Lovelace Stadium. Over head coach Rodney DeLong's tenure, North Texas holds a 92-31 home record including 56 wins in league play.
"Sweeps are always big — we needed to sweep, and we needed it to stay where we are [in the standings]," DeLong said. "We had a great weekend […] the freshmen did a good job today and a lot of them contributed in little ways and helped us win."
With the win, UNT retained its third place standing in The American as it trails second place South Florida (35-12, 14-5-1) by a half-game and first place Florida Atlantic by 1.5 games. Both the Bulls and Owls close their respective conference series on Saturday.
In game one, the Mean Green came back from three runs down as the Blazers (20-26, 8-13) held a three-run lead after the third inning.
Sophomore Madison Conley expanded on her stellar weekend with a two-run home run to put UNT on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. On the weekend, Conley finished 6-for-9 at the plate with four extra-base hits including two home runs and tallied eight RBI.
Later in the fourth, freshman Katy Brock scored on a fielder's choice to knot the game at 3-3 before Tatum Sparks drove in Ausha Moore to give the Mean Green a one-run lead.
UAB tied the game in the top of the sixth inning before Taylor Platt collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.
In the seventh, sophomore Kayleigh Smith (W, 4-4) closed out the Blazers as she picked up the win over 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief.
The win marked the Mean Green's 18th comeback victory of the season, which is good for second in the country behind Auburn at 19.
In game two, UNT took an early lead on a Conley two-run double in the bottom of the first inning before the Blazers stole the lead with three runs in the top of the third.
Conley came through with her second two-run double of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning before UNT tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when sisters Blayze and Riley McNemar each recorded RBI hits.
Senior Skylar Savage (W, 15-6) registered her 11th complete game of the season as she struck out three batters in the win. For the weekend, Savage collected two complete-game wins and finished with a 1.50 ERA over 14 innings pitched.
Over the series sweep, the Mean Green started three different catchers as junior Elizabeth Moffitt was behind the plate in game one while freshmen, Rylie Harris and Sophia Schow, handled Friday's doubleheader. It marked the second instance in program history that UNT started three different catchers in a conference sweep after it did so against UTEP on April 1-3, 2022.
