SARASOTA, Fla. - The UNT men's golf team had the third-best round of the day on Wednesday to climb the leaderboard at the American Athletic Championship on the final day and finish alone in third place, after entering the tournament as the seventh-seeded team, behind huge performances from a pair of freshmen and a senior in his final event.
The Mean Green were led all week by freshmen Blake Keen and Alex Huang, who tied for fourth and eighth, respectively, and on Wednesday from a huge final-round 68 for senior James Tureskis, who finished off his one season in Denton and his college career with a round pivotal to the team's surprise finish.
The team's final-round 277 was the program's best round at a conference championship in program history and the best postseason round since the 2013 NCAA Pullman Regional, when UNT also shot a 277.
Keen matched Tureskis' final-round 68 and finished with a 67-71-68 to tie for fourth at 10-under par and assure himself a spot on the AAC All-Conference team, which will be released next week. Huang tied for eighth at 8-under par with a three-day score of 71-68-69, while Tureskis moved up eight spots on the leaderboard with his final-round 68 to crack the top 25.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys fought all week," head coach Luke Calcatera said. "James Tureskis had a great final round that really helped the team. To see the freshmen have such a solid week just shows how bright the future is for North Texas golf."
UNT went 11-under on the day to finish with a season-best round of 277 - a round that was barely beaten by the top two teams, No. 33 South Florida and No. 44 Charlotte, who entered the tournament both as locks for the NCAA tournament and decided the team championship in a playoff that Charlotte ultimately won.
Huang tied for second in the field with 16 birdies across the three days, and he and Keen tied for third in Par 4 scoring at 4-under par.
