Hunter becomes the first staff hire under head coach Cody White
DENTON – UNT head softball coach Cody White hired Jon Hunter as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Wednesday, the first hire of his tenure.
"I couldn't be more excited to welcome Jon to the Mean Green family," White said. "Having worked alongside him for 12 years, I know firsthand what an incredible asset he'll be to our program. I'm thrilled to have such a great friend and valued colleague join us in Denton, along with his wife Traci and daughters Abby and Halle."
Hunter joined the Mean Green after 12 seasons at Central Oklahoma where he worked under White as an assistant coach from 2013-23 before being promoted to associate head coach on Jan. 31, 2024.
"I'm excited for the opportunity that Coach White and the administration has provided for me at UNT," Hunter said. "This program has so much potential, and I can't wait to get started building a championship program, both on and off the field. Go Mean Green!"
Hunter helped UCO develop 23 All-Americans, 62 All-Region selections and 77 all-conference honorees as three players won Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association Central Region Player of the Year awards.
The Bronchos have finished inside the top 10 of the NFCA/GoRout Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll including a No. 5 finish in the national poll after the 2025 season. In both 2023 and 2025, Central Oklahoma won NFCA Division II Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
Last season, Hunter helped lead Central Oklahoma to its 10th NCAA Division II Tournament appearance which ended in the Women's College World Series as one of the final six teams in contention for the national title.
Hunter began his coaching career at Edmond North High School (Edmond, Okla.) as an assistant basketball coach in 1999 before he moved to an assistant role with the school's baseball team in 2004. In 2012, Hunter helped lead the Huskies baseball team to the 6A state championship in the spring before winning the 6A state title in the fall as the school's interim head softball coach.
Hailing from Edmond, Okla., Hunter attended Clinton High School before playing collegiate baseball at St. Gregory's. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Central Oklahoma in 2002. He and his wife, Traci, have two daughters: Abby and Halle.
