IRVING, Texas — UNT soccer veterans Mia Bernard, Abi Major and Rachel Roebuck were named to the 2025 American Women's Soccer Preseason Watch List on Tuesday, as announced by the league.
This is the third year in a row that Roebuck, a graduate student, has earned the preseason recognition.
"It's great to see Rachel, Mia and Abi being recognized for their talent," said head coach John Hedlund. "The three are really dialed in for this fall, incredibly fit and great leaders for our team."
Bernard, the youngest of the trio, is North Texas' top returning assist leader after notching six a year ago. The junior from Heath, Texas, tied for third on the team in 2024 with 12 points (3 goals, 6 assists). She is one of three team captains, along with Major and Roebuck.
Major, who is a redshirt senior defender entering her fourth season with the Mean Green, joined Roebuck last season as the only two players on the roster to start all 19 matches. She led her team in minutes played last season with 1,651. The centerback helped lead a defensive unit that had eight shutouts over the 19-match season. She also tallied one assist last season.
Roebuck is arguably the current team's most decorated player as she enters her fourth season with the Mean Green as a returning captain. She led a defensive unit last season that allowed just one goal per match and hardly ever leaves the field. She was voted first team all-conference last season. It was her second all-conference honor at UNT. Though she primarily plays defense, last season she moved into attacking positions often to try and generate goals, which she did. Roebuck last year led the team with a single season career-high eight goals and added a career-high five assists. She also came through in the clutch, leading the team with three game-winning goals. She will be a team captain for the fourth straight year.
UNT was picked to finish fifth out of 10 teams in the league's preseason poll.
"On the preseason poll, to me they have always been more of a popularity contest," Hedlund said. "But I do feel strongly we're one the few teams in the league that no one wants to play."
The UNT women's soccer season starts on Aug. 14 when they host UIW at 7 p.m. They will stay in Denton to host Sam Houston State on Sunday at 7 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
