Career nights from Washington, Fouonji drive Mean Green to five-set victory
ARLINGTON, Texas – Mean Green volleyball knocked off UT Arlington 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 27-25, 15-7) on Sunday night at College Park Center.
"I am really, really proud of the team and proud of the way we fought," head coach Dave Fleming said. "We didn't play a perfect match, but we were gritty and resilient tonight. After the match, we talked about resilience, and I think that's the exact right word for our effort against a talented UTA team."
UNT (7-2) handed the Mavericks (8-1) its first loss of the season along with its first home loss since Oct. 30, 2023, with the five-set victory. Senior setter Alexa Washington enjoyed a career night with personal-best marks in assists (32), digs (16), kills (5) and blocks (3).
"[Alexa] finds a way to do the right thing for the team, so her effort was huge tonight," Fleming added. "She is a special volleyball player when it comes to the little things and doing those things well."
Junior middle blocker Loredana Founji led the Mean Green with a career high 11 blocks as the team accumulated 17.0 total blocks, which is tied for the fifth-most in a single match since 2008. Fouonji also tallied personal-best marks in kills (13), attacks (30) and points (19.0) in the match.
The first set featured a back-and-forth battle with 11 tie scores and five lead changes as UNT staved off set point three times before it fell 25-23. The Mean Green utilized that momentum to capture a wire-to-wire, 25-18 set win in the second as sophomore Addison Achilles ended the frame with her fifth of eight kills.
In the third set, a 23-21 lead by the visitors was dashed after a four-point run from UTA stole the set from North Texas. The Mean Green raced out to an early seven-point lead in the fourth before the Mavericks took its first lead of the set at 24-23 match point. Reagan Bedell countered with a block and a kill before UTA leveled at 25-25. Fouonji helped put away the fourth with a kill to force set point and block assist to close out the frame, 27-25.
UNT opened a 9-4 lead at the midway point of the fifth set before it finished on a five-point run capped by a combination block from Washington and Fouonji.
The Mean Green will finish its pre-conference schedule at the Texan Classic in Stephenville, Texas, beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m. versus former Conference USA rival LA Tech.
