HUMBLE, Texas — The UNT women's golf team is back in action on Sunday as they tee off the spring season with a dual against Houston Christian at the Golf Club of Houston.
The dual against the Huskies will be a warm-up for what will be a competitive spring for UNT as they position themselves for another strong conference championship run in April.
"We are excited to get our spring kicked off down in Houston," said Mean Green head coach Michael Akers. "The purpose of this match is to knock off the rust off and get some additional looks at the Golf Club of Houston. We play the Chevron there in late February. This will also be a qualifier for our Puerto Rico event. The ladies are motivated."
Sunday will be North Texas' first competition since Oct. 28 when they took third at the Bear Brawl in Waco. Senior Mason Lewis placed third (-2) on the individual leaderboard as she shot a single round career low of 66 on the final round.
The Bear Brawl was just one of many fall highlights for the Mean Green.
Lewis' senior classmate Malisone Chanthapanya broke the program record for the best single round 18-hole score as she shot a 64 to wrap up the Jim West Challenge at the Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos on Oct. 20. Chanthapanya placed second overall on the individual leaderboard for her career best finish. She was one shot off the tournament champion.
In September North Texas took second at the Sam Golden Collegiate Invitational as they shot a 278 (-10). It was the program's second-best 54-hole score ever. Junior Bouquet Subsomboon finished second on the individual leaderboard as she shot a career best 206 (-10).
The last round of the Sam Golden was highlighted by freshman Victoria Georgieva who led all players in the third round as she shot a 66 and birdied the final six holes.
"The first part of the spring will be very pivotal to get ourselves in position for an at-large bid," Akers said. "The events in Puerto Rico and Houston have loaded fields so we need to be ready."
UNT will head to the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on Feb. 1 and then return to Houston to compete in the Chevron Collegiate a few weeks after returning from Puerto Rico.
They will have two final tournaments over March and early April before making a run at their fourth conference championship in just the last six years.
