DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team snapped Tulsa's 10-game win streak Sunday afternoon at the Super Pit with a 72-67 win.
There were 14 lead changes and neither team led by more than six points.
The Mean Green (10-5, 1-1) held the potent Golden Hurricane (13-2, 1-1) offense, which entered the game averaging almost 90 points a game and was coming off a 49-point win over Rice, to their second fewest points they've scored all year and 22 points less than their season average.
On the offensive side of the ball, North Texas hit eight 3-pointers and got 25 points from its bench as the scoring was spread out.
The win extends the Mean Green home winning streak at the Super Pit to 14 in a row.
"I'm really proud of the guys," said head coach Daniyal Robinson who picked up his first American Conference victory on Sunday. "A ton of credit to Tulsa. They're a really good team. They came in here riding a 10-game winning streak, but we had a strong collective effort and had some guys play some tough minutes for us."
UNT sophomore Je'Shawn Stevenson was held scoreless in the first half on Sunday but finished with a game-high 21 points as he knocked down half of the Mean Green's 3-pointers and converted clutch free throws late in the game.
It's the Chicago native's second straight 20-point game and his sixth of the season.
Junior Buddy Hammer Jr. played just 12 minutes off the bench, but the forward made big plays in the second half as he finished with a career-high eight points and a career-high five rebounds in the five-point win. He was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers. He entered Sunday having made just one all year.
Senior Dylan Arnett was the only other Mean Green player to score in double figures as he finished with 10 points.
"It took all of us," Arnett said. "That's of course a really good opponent and we knew it was going to take a complete team effort today and there's a lot of belief in that locker room that we were going to get it done together."
Tulsa entered Sunday with the American's top NCAA NET ranking at 38. The win over the Golden Hurricane is the Mean Green's highest ranked NET victory since they upset Purdue in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
Next UNT will aim to further extend their Super Pit win streak to 15 in a row as they host South Florida on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT
