PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – The UNT men's golf team completed its first round of the spring Sunday at the Compadres Collegiate, shooting an 11-over 299 to finish the day tied for second.
Despite the lengthy winter layoff, Alex Huang continued his stellar play from the fall with an even-par 72 that put him in a tie for third on the individual leaderboard. Huang showed impressive composure after a double bogey on his opening hole, surging back up the leaderboard thanks to four birdies in his final six holes. His five total birdies on the day ranked second most among the field.
Joining Huang in the top 10 was Noah Blaickner, whose 74 put him in a tie for eighth. Blaickner led the Mean Green attack for most of the morning before back-to-back bogeys on his final two holes.
Blake Keen sank three birdies Sunday as part of his 4-over 76, which put him in 21st place. Just behind Keen, Mitchell Maier's round of 77 sent him to Monday's action tied for 24th.
Rayhan Latief and Joe Stover, who competed as an individual, both shot 7-over to land in a tie for 30th.
North Texas returns to Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club tomorrow morning looking to close the seven-shot gap on first-place UTSA. The second round will once again tee off at 8:30 a.m. CT and be available for live scoring here.
