Men’s Golf Takes Third at Season Opener

BARK RIVER, Mich. – The UNT men's golf team began the new season with a third-place finish at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, which wrapped up play Monday afternoon.
With three returners and a pair of newcomers in the lineup, North Texas maintained a consistent level of play all weekend long as it shot at least three-under in every round. Sunday morning's 282 marked UNT's lowest score of the weekend and catapulted the Mean Green to their 12th top-three result under head coach Luke Calcatera.
North Texas completed the tournament at 13-under, just three strokes back of runner-up West Virginia. Meanwhile, Michigan ran away with the team title at 41-under.
In his first collegiate action, freshman Connor Bryce was UNT's top finisher at five-under and in a tie for 11th place. Bryce made 14 birdies, tied for most on the team, and was under par in all three rounds with scores of 71-70-70. Fellow newcomer Arjun Singh Bhatia, a transfer from Long Island, also led the Mean Green charge at four-under. He placed T13 while matching Bryce with 14 birdies and a trio of par-or-better showings.
Another outstanding college debut came from Dion Regan, a freshman out of West Wales who competed as an individual. Regan carded a second-round 67, the lowest by any Mean Green player this weekend, en route to a top-15 placement on the leaderboard.
After nearly three weeks off, the Mean Green will continue their fall slate at the Argent Financial Classic on Sept. 27-29 in Choudrant, La.
