Mean Green carry six-game winning streak into first place showdown
SAN ANTONIO – UNT softball travels to UTSA for a meeting atop the American Conference standings beginning Friday at 6 p.m., followed by game two Saturday at 1 p.m. and game three Sunday at noon on ESPN+ from Roadrunner Field.
For the first time in program history, the Mean Green (16-13) opened league play with a 6-0 record after it swept Tulsa at home last weekend while the Roadrunners (17-13, 6-0) also hold an undefeated American Conference mark after sweeps of Tulsa and Memphis.
Aside from conference opening weekends, this marks the second time in series history that both teams enter undefeated in league play. The first was 2014 when both teams were 3-0 and UNT went on to win the series 2-1 at Lovelace Stadium.
On Monday, right-handed pitcher Britney Lewinski and first base Ariah Mitchell were named weekly American Conference Honorable Mention selections after leading the Mean Green to a home sweep over Tulsa.
Lewinski tallied two wins in the circle and finished with a 1.85 ERA while Mitchell recorded five RBI and eight total bases, including a key two-run home run in Friday's 9-8 extra inning victory over the Golden Hurricane.
UTSA have won seven of its past nine games after a 4-1 loss at Sam Houston on Wednesday night. McNeese transfer Samantha Mundine joined UNT's Lewinski and Mitchell with a selection as an American Conference Honorable Mention honoree on Monday after she dropped six RBI on four hits against Memphis.
Last season, UNT collected a three-game sweep of UTSA while it outscored the Roadrunners 33-8 in the series. Riley McNemar posted a .571 batting average with five runs scored and five RBI while Madison Conley reached base safely in six of her nine plate appearances in the series.
North Texas leads the all-time series 33-14 with wins in 24 of its past 28 games, dating back to 2017. Conversely, the Mean Green have never swept a road series at UTSA and trail 10-12 in away games.
