Men's Basketball Hosts Rice In Regular Season Finale
3/3/2026 10:21:00 AM | Men's Basketball
DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team hosts Rice Wednesday night at the Super Pit for its regular season finale.
The Mean Green (17-13, 8-9) and the Owls (12-17, 6-10) are scheduled to tip off Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on KHYI 95.3 FM and on ESPN+.
North Texas can finish as high as sixth in the American Conference standings with a win Wednesday and other positive results around the league following its game. A sixth-place finish earns a first round bye. The last first year UNT head coach to finish sixth or higher in the conference standings was Johnny Jones in 2002 in the Sun Belt who led the Mean Green to the league's sixth best record. A win Wednesday for North Texas clinches a spot for the Mean Green in the 2026 American Conference championship. A loss does not eliminate UNT, however, its fate then is taken out of its hands, and they will have to wait for the results from around the league the rest of the week.
A win Wednesday for North Texas also gives the Mean Green 18 regular season victories, which would be the most by a first year UNT head coach since Bill Blakeley won 22 games his first season 50 years ago in 1975-76.
UNT will honor four seniors Wednesday night: Dylan Arnett, Will McClendon, Josiah Shackleford and Demarion Watson.
The 2026 American Conference Championship begins with the first round on March 11 from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. The 10-team tournament runs through March 15.
