Men’s Golf in Third After 36 Holes at Maridoe Collegiate

CARROLLTON, Texas – The UNT men's golf team had a successful opening day at the Maridoe Collegiate, shooting 18-over to take sole possession of third place through two rounds.

Battling an elite field at the challenging Maridoe Golf Club, North Texas only trails defending national champion Oklahoma State and ninth-ranked Arizona State on the team leaderboard. It holds a four-stroke edge over Baylor for third and sits ahead of a pair of ranked opponents in No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 16 Alabama. Oklahoma State built a commanding lead Monday, clearing the second-place Sun Devils by 14 shots.

After shooting 11-over in the morning, the Mean Green fired a 7-over second round that was the second-lowest 18-hole score of the afternoon wave. UNT took full advantage of the familiar terrain, carding 29 birdies throughout the day. Only the leading Cowboys tallied more.

Alex Huang led the Mean Green with eight birdies and a 1-over showing that netted him a tie for seventh place. He got off to a fast start thanks to a 2-under 70 in the morning, which was highlighted by a chip-in eagle on Maridoe's seventh hole. Sitting five shots back of the lead, Huang is in good position to secure his third top 10 of the season and the fifth of his career.

Making his first start of the spring season, Kalle Svederman matched Huang's 70 in the first round before ultimately landing in a tie for ninth at 2-over. Svederman carded three birdies and just one bogey in that round, potentially setting him up for his first top-10 finish since joining the program.

Not far behind Svederman was Blake Keen, who stormed back up the leaderboard thanks to a second-round 69 that saw him sink five birdies. He concluded the afternoon tied for 15th at 4-over and just two strokes back of the top 10.

The final round of the Maridoe Collegiate is scheduled to begin Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. CT. Fans can attend free of charge or follow the action live here.
