The Mean Green eliminated from American Conference title race, hold one game lead on third

DENTON – UNT softball suffered its first American Conference series sweep of the season as it fell 8-2 against Wichita State on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.

"We've got to take ownership of [our performance] and that's the next step," head coach Cody White said. "It didn't play out the way we envisioned it obviously, but Wichita State has a really good team. We've got to be able to set up better and we've got to be able to keep the ball in the yard a little bit more. But all credit to them because they came ready to play."

The Mean Green (27-24, 14-10) had not been swept in a conference series since May 3, 2025, before Sunday's loss to the first-placed Shockers (32-15, 18-6) with three regular season games remaining on the league schedule.

North Texas will enter the final weekend with a one-game lead for third place over East Carolina as finishing in third or fourth place holds automatic advancement into the American Conference Championship Quarterfinals.

Madison Conley helped UNT take an early one-run lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. The home run marked her 16th of the season which moved her into a three-way tie for fourth place on the single-season leaderboard with a pair of seasons from former teammate Kailey Gamble.

She would later score the only additional run for the Mean Green on a wild inning-ending double play in the fourth inning.

In the third, the Shockers responded with a four-run inning which featured a pair of home runs before doubling the lead over the next three frames.

The Mean Green visit championship contender South Florida for its final American Conference series of the season, beginning Thursday at 5:05 p.m. CT from USF Softball Stadium.
