SARASOTA, Fla. – Freshman Mitchell Maier shot a 5-under 67 to pace the UNT men's golf team during the opening round of the American Conference Championship on Monday.
Playing the first postseason golf of his collegiate career, Maier concluded the day just two shots back of the lead in a tie for seventh. It was Maier's third 67-or-better round of the season and matched his 67 from the Border Olympics for the best 18-hole score by a Mean Green player this spring. He made six birdies and nearly came away with a bogey-free scorecard before surrendering his first on the final hole of the day.
As a team, North Texas sits in solo seventh after compiling a 4-under 284, marking its lowest 18-hole since the third round of the Louisiana Classics on March 10. It is just two strokes back of a top-five spot of the leaderboard and can get back in the title mix with a strong round Tuesday. At 17-under, Charlotte currently holds a one-shot advantage over Memphis and Rice for first place.
Kalle Svederman was one of six players in the field to sink an eagle Monday, needing just three strokes to complete the par-five fourth. He claimed a share of 18th at 1-over, while Alex Huang's even-par round put him in a tie for 26th. At last year's conference tournament, Huang was in similar position through 18 holes prior to shooting back-to-back rounds in the 60s to take eighth.
Rounding out the Mean Green lineup was Blake Keen (+2) and Rayhan Latief (+3), who completed the day tied for 37th and 44th, respectively.
North Texas is expected to tee off for the second round Tuesday at 8:28 a.m. CT alongside Wichita State and UTSA on the 10th hole. Live results can be followed here.
