Mean Green close the season 17-9 overall
ROME, Ga. – The UNT tennis team saw one of its most historic seasons come to an end Tuesday as they dropped a narrow 4-3 decision against College of Charleston in the quarterfinal of the UTR NIT Championship at Rome Tennis Center.
The Mean Green jumped ahead early 3-0 but surrendered four straight singles points as they close the season 17-9 overall. The 17 total wins and the .653 overall win percentage are both the best in a single season since 2013.
North Texas started the match as they have many times this season by winning the doubles point.
The Mean Green got a 6-4 victory from Carolina Laydner and Pia Petelinsek at line three and picked up a thrilling 7-6 (7-5) win from Marina Adati and Ujin Batsukh at line two to take an early 1-0 lead.
UNT closes the season with an 18-8 mark in doubles point and took the doubles point in 11 of its final 13 matches.
A pair of true freshmen gave the Mean Green two points in singles action.
Playing at line six, Giuliana Ciangherotti picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory for her 12th singles win of the season. She closes the year with a 6-2 mark at line six and won five straight matches to end the season.
Moments later, Pia Petelinsek put North Texas ahead 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at line five. Petelinsek finishes the season with a 9-8 singles record and was the only player on the team with wins at four different lines this season (2, 3, 4 & 5).
The College of Charleston rallied back, however, winning matches at lines one, two, three and four to win the match 4-3.
Overall, the Mean Green close the historic year with a number of milestones, both as a team and individually.
Laydner finished the year with a 15-4 overall singles record and an 11-3 mark at line one. Her .786 line one win single season percentage is the best in program history while her .789 overall single season win percentage ranks second all-time. Through three seasons, Laydner has a career singles dual record of 37-11 which would currently ranks as the highest career win percentage (.771) in program history.
Batsukh won nine matches at line six this season, tied for the eighth most in program history while fellow true freshman Ciangherotti tied with Lou Chalard for the second-most overall wins on the team with 12.
In doubles play, the combination of Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz went 14-6 as a duo with all matches played at line one. The 14 wins are tied for the sixth-most of any doubles pair in program history and are the most since Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubize had 17 in 2017.
As a team, UNT set a new program record with 12 home wins had a program-best 10-match streak of doubles point wins. The Mean Green also advanced to the quarterfinal of the American Conference Championship for the first time in program history.
The future looks bright for North Texas as well as they are set to return seven of eight players from the 2025-26 roster.
