Bretson McNeal joined the UNT men's basketball staff as a graduate manager ahead of the 2022-2023 season. McNeal Is pursuing his master’s degree in Recreation, Event, and Sports Management.
McNeal is included in the day-to-day operations with the program including all practices, workouts game days, processing practice and game film. He also specializes in player development.
McNeal graduated with an undergraduate degree in Sports and Leisure Studies from Midwestern State University in 2016 where he played under the late Nelson Haggerty. who was also an assistant coach at UNT from 2019-21. McNeal was also coached by current North Texas assistant coach Andre Shaw.
McNeal was a men’s basketball standout and earned All-LSC First Team honors. He was one of the top newcomers in the league and ranked fourth in Lone Star Conference in scoring averaging (15.9 points per game). McNeal was also named to the South Central Regional All Tournament Team in 2015. McNeal’s senior campaign earned him LSC Preseason Player of the Year honors and All Lone Star Conference Second-Team Honors while leading MSU to a Lone Star Conference championship. He led the LSC in steals with 48 (1.6 spg) and shot 41.8 percent from 3.
He began his coaching career as a varsity assistant coach at Twin Cities Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota from 2020-2021. While coaching his younger brothers, McNeal began skill development training with professional teammates like Dave Hicks III, Tavarion Nix, Khapri Alston, Geno Crandall, Tim Gill, Zach Lofton. Since starting with his younger brothers Carmello and Carrington McNeal, he has trained various other NCAA Division I athletes back in his hometown. The Minnesota native of North Minneapolis is the son of Western Kentucky Hall of Famer Brett McNeal and the late Floria Ruffin-McNeal.
