Matt Braeuer joined the Mean Green coaching staff during the summer of 2018. Braeuer is responsible for player development, game planning and recruiting.
In his five seasons at North Texas the Mean Green have gone 115-47 (.710), which is the 21st best winning percentage in the nation since 2018. During his five seasons in Denton, North Texas has won three Conference USA championships, won the 2023 NIT championship and reached the 2021 NCAA Tournament where they earned a program-best No. 13 seeding and upset Purdue in the first round, 78-69 (ot). It was the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win.Â
Braeuer helped recruit a number of all-conference players to UNT but most notably 2023 C-USA Player of the Year Tylor Perry from Coffeyville Community College. During Perry's two seasons so far at UNT, the Mean Green went 56-14 (.800), won the 2022 C-USA regular season title and 2023 NIT championship. Perry was named the NIT Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.Â
Braeuer has twice helped guide UNT to the most single season wins in program history. In 2022-23 the Mean Green won school record 31 games. It came one year after UNT won a then program record 25 games in 2021-22. In each of those two seasons North Texas won a program record 16 league games.Â
In 2020 Braeuer helped recruit the No. 1 ranked recruiting class per Rivals.com in Conference USA, the No. 4 recruiting class in the state of Texas and No. 49 in the nation.
Braeuer came to the Mean Green from the College of Charleston, where he had served for two years and helped lead the Cougars to back-to-back 25-win seasons and Colonial Athletic Association regular-season and tournament titles.
Braeuer made multiple coaching stops before Charleston, including spending one year at Midland College from 2010-11, where he coached under UNT associate head coach Ross Hodge. In that season, the Chaparrals went 33-4 and reached the NJCAA Division I national championship game.

Braeuer earned a job at the University of Maryland under head coach Mark Turgeon. There, he served as the men's video coordinator and was responsible for assisting with scouting, game preparation and video analysis of practices and games.

Following his two-year stint at Maryland, Braeuer coached at Sam Houston State from 2013 through 2016. The Bearkats made back-to-back appearances in the Southland Tournament championship game and turned in 24-win and 26-win seasons. Sam Houston also earned three postseason berths to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

Braeuer was a three-year starting point guard at Wichita State from 2004 to 2008. Braeuer ranks in the top 15 all-time in career three-pointers made (130) and career assists (308) for the Shockers. During his playing time at Wichita, the Shockers made the NCAA Tournament and reached the Sweet Sixteen and earned a top-10 national ranking.

After earning his bachelor's degree in sport administration from Wichita, he served as a graduate assistant for the Shockers. He received his master's degree in sport management in 2010.

Braeuer is a native of Belton, Texas, and graduated from Belton High School, where he played under his father Ed. As a senior, he was named a Texas Class 5A First Team All-State and First Team All-Region selection. Braeuer also garnered MVP honors for District 13-5A.

He and his wife Katie have twin sons.
