Todd Shelton enters his second season as the basketball operations director for the North Texas men’s basketball team.
Prior to North Texas, he was the head boys basketball coach at Haltom High School for three years. Prior to Haltom, Shelton was the head coach at Gatesville High School (Waco Area) where he led the Fightin’ Hornets to a 2011 playoff appearance, and a district runner-up finish to LaVega High School, which had an undefeated record during the regular season.
Prior to Gatesville, Shelton worked in Fort Worth ISD (South Hills High School/Southwest High School) from 2007-10.
During the 2005-2006 season, Shelton worked in the front office of the Cleveland Cavaliers. His duties included scouting, preparing intel for the 2006 NBA Draft, and assisting general managers Danny Ferry (Atlanta), Chris Grant, Mike Winger (Oklahoma City), and Lance Blanks. The Cavaliers compiled a record of 50-32 and made the playoffs for the first time in ten years.
Shelton began his coaching career in Crowley ISD (Crowley Middle School/Crowley HS) under North Crowley head coach Tom Brakel.
From 2005 to 2009, Shelton coached with the Dallas Showtyme AAU basketball program, which was directed by NT graduate Erven Davis. Shelton has coached former NT Players Harold Stewart, George Odufuwa and Jordan Williams. Willie Warren (Oklahoma), Marquez Haynes (Texas-Arlington), and Justin Mason (Texas).Shelton holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Wesleyan University, where he also played basketball. He also holds a master’s degree in special education from St. John’s University in Queens, New York. He was a graduate assistant for the men’s basketball Team at SJU when they made the NCAA Tournament in the 2001-02 season.
Shelton has two brothers, Terry and Trent, who were standout athletes. Terry was the starting point guard on the 1999 Crowley state championship basketball team and played college basketball at UTSA and college football at North Texas. Trent was a standout wide receiver at North Crowley High School and Baylor University. He went on to play three years in the National Football League with the Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Redskins. Shelton’s uncle, George Stewart, is the wide receivers coach for the Minnesota Vikings.
