Martin Clayes begins his second year as an assistant coach with the North Texas women's soccer program. He served as a volunteer assistant in 2014 when the program won the Conference USA regular-season title.
In 2015, Clayes helped coach the Mean Green to what might go down as the best team in program history. North Texas won a school-record 19 games, en route to winning back-to-back regular season titles. The team won its first Conference USA Championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in school history. The 2015 team was ranked as high as No. 3 in the central region and received votes in the national poll throughout the season.
Clayes brings 10 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Mean Green.
Prior to coming to Denton, Clayes was the head men's soccer coach at SUNY Martime College for the 2013-14 season. He led the Privateers to an 8-11-2 overall record and a fourth-place conference finish.
Clayes also had head coaching experience at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. In three seasons with the Division III team, he tied the school record for wins (11) in 2010 and won the league title in 2011. He was also named conference coach of the year in 2011.
Before Westminster, Clayes was the assistant women's soccer coach at Truman State University, his alma mater. In 2008, with Clayes on staff, the Bulldogs advanced to consecutive NCAA appearances, reaching the quarterfinals in 2008 and the second round in 2009. In 2009, the Truman team also won the MIAA Conference regular season title.
Clayes graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and played four years for Truman's men's soccer team, earning NSCAA All-American honors his senior year. Clayes and the Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II NCAA Tournament in 2003 and the Sweet 16 in 2005.
Besides college coaching, Clayes has been involved in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) and Professional Development League (PDL), first as a player/assistant for the St. Louis Lions, and then as an assistant for the Chicago Fire (PDL) an affiliate of the MLS team.
A native of Perth, Scotland, Clayes earned his master's degree in sports science from the United States Sports Academy. He currently hold a USSF “C,” NSCAA Junior VI and NSCAA Level 1 Goalkeeper Diploma and a Scottish FA Youth License.
