DENTON (11/22/04) The North Texas softball team signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Kelly Burns announced Monday. For the 2005-06 season, the Mean Green will add Kadie Platt (Perry, OK) and Sarah Jones (Purcell, OK).
"I am thrilled that Kadie Platt and Sarah Jones have made the decision to be the newest members of Mean Green softball," said Burns. Both of these young ladies fit into our program and philosophy very well and will be a big part of facilitating the growth of our program."
Platt, a middle infielder and outfielder, is an all-area and all-region player and has been named MVP of the Perry High School softball team. A four-year letterwinner in softball, Platt hit .375 as a senior. She also lettered in track and basketball. Academically, Platt was a member of the National Honor Roll, Principal’s Honor Roll and listed in Who’s Who Among High School Students.
"Kadie is an athlete who brings both defensive versitility and speed to our lineup," said Burns. "She is also an accomplished scholar as well as a person of sound character. She will be an asset to our program on every level."
Jones, a shortstop, was an all-state player and member of the 2004 Class 3A State Championship team at Purcell High School. As a senior, she batted .458 and was named first-team Little All-City and offensive conference player of the year. Jones received all-conference honors all four years and was named defensive player of the year in 2003. She also lettered in basketball and made the all-conference team in 2003.
"Sarah also brings sound work ethic and character to the Mean Green," said Burns. "She is an enthusiastic young lady and accomplished athlete who will help us defensively through the middle as well as strengthen our hitting lineup. She is poised and focused at the plate and hits with good power."
The 2005 Mean Green returns all of its starters from last year’s team that posted a 22-57 overall record in the new era of NT softball. North Texas fielded a softball team last spring for the first time in 16 years. The Mean Green went 6-14 in the Sun Belt Conference, including winning four out of its last seven regular season conference games. In the conference tournament, North Texas defeated Western Kentucky in the first game before losing to Louisiana-Lafayette and New Mexico State.
