Bostic and Waters Lead Mean Green Offense

DENTON (3/26/04)- Freshmen Heather Bostic and Susan Waters combined for six of the North Texas softball team’s 11 hits in the Mean Green’s 8-7 win against Northern Colorado in the first day of action in the Mean Green/Wells Fargo Classic at Denia Park.
The Mean Green (9-36) lost its first game of the tournament, 8-0, to Harvard.
Bostic and Waters each posted three hits in the win against Northern Colorado. Bostic went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Waters posted two doubles and two RBI. The third baseman leads the team with eight doubles.
NT was able to string together hits against Northern Colorado, something the squad struggled with against Harvard. The Mean Green posted three runs off four hits, including an RBI double by Waters, to take an early 4-2 lead against UNC in the third inning. Bostic singled in the fourth, and Waters knocked her in with her second RBI double of the game. Waters also scored on the play due to a Bears error.
The Bears cut into the 8-2 Mean Green lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth inning. Whitney Platten hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Erin Peterson hit a three-run shot in the sixth to bring the Bears within one, 8-7. Peterson also homered in the third inning. She went 4-for-4 against NT and was 6-for-8 on the day with four home runs and 10 RBI.
Katy Maxey sealed the NT victory, forcing three straight outs in the bottom of the seventh. The freshman earned her seventh victory of the season, allowing 11 hits and seven runs. Maxey went 2-for-5 at the plate with one RBI in the combined two games.
Freshman Monica Garcia posted three hits in the combined two games, including a double against Northern Colorado. Freshman Christen Jonse and sophomore Kelei Walker both posted hits in each of the two games.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, March 27 with two more games in the Mean Green/Wells Fargo Classic. The Mean Green faces New Mexico at 3 pm and Northern Colorado again at 5:30 pm.
