Mean Green Softball Wins Third Straight

DENTON (3/27/04)- The North Texas softball team exploded for a season-high 11 runs against Northern Colorado and won its third straight game, 11-3, in the second day of action in the Mean Green/Wells Fargo Classic on Saturday afternoon at Denia Park.
The Mean Green (11-36) defeated New Mexico (25-16) in its first game of the day. The three-game winning streak is NT’s longest of the season. The Mean Green has scored 26 runs in a combined three games. Previous to the last three games, it took North Texas 17 games to score a combined 26 runs.
North Texas and Northern Colorado (4-14) hit a combined five home runs in their game, including four by the Mean Green.
NT pitcher Mandy Hacker won her third game of the season, allowing two earned runs off five UNC hits.
After getting down in the first inning, 2-0 against the Bears, the Mean Green responded with six runs off six hits in the second. Junior Ana Vega posted her first home run in a Mean Green uniform with a two-run shot. Vega knocked in junior Brittiny Chapman, who got on base with an RBI single. Junior Kelei Walker hit a three-run homer in the same inning to give NT a 6-2 lead.
After Erin Peterson hit her fifth home run of the tournament for Northern Colorado in the third, North Texas continued its long-ball hitting with solo home runs by freshman Susan Waters and Walker in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Waters posted her team-leading sixth home run, while Walker hit her first two home runs of the year. Walker went 4-for-6 in the combined two games with six RBI.
Freshman Christen Jonse sealed the win for North Texas with a three-RBI double in the fifth inning, ending the game on the eight-run rule. Jonse went 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles and four RBI. She has hit safely in five games.
North Texas used a five-run fifth inning to defeat New Mexico in the first game of the day. Freshman Katy Maxey won her eighth game of the season, allowing four hits and one earned run in seven innings. At the plate, Maxey posted two singles and has now hit safely in a team-high eight games.
After two days of play, North Texas currently holds first place in the Mean Green/Wells Fargo Classic with three wins. The Mean Green returns to action on Sunday, March 28 with two games at 10 am and 12:30 pm against Harvard and New Mexico, respectively.
