MIAMI, Fla. (4/11/04)- The North Texas softball team lost to FIU, 3-2, in extra innings after coming back from a 2-0 deficit on Sunday afternoon at University Park.
The Golden Panthers (22-23, 4-0) swept the four-game series with the Mean Green. North Texas (15-42, 0-4) lost the first game of the Sunday doubleheader, 8-4.
Freshman first baseman Heather Bostic posted two RBI singles in the 3-2 loss to Florida International. Bostic knocked in sophomore Kelei Walker in the fourth and sixth innings.
Sophomore pitcher Raci Burnett started her first game of the season in the nightcap, allowing eight hits and two earned runs in seven-plus innings. Burnett held the Golden Panthers scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, forcing an eighth inning. FIU scored one run off two hits and two Mean Green errors in the eighth to take the win.
NT’s three-run rally in the sixth inning of the first game fell short as FIU held on to win, 8-4. The Mean Green took an early 1-0 in the top of the first inning after Bostic knocked in leadoff hitter Katy Maxey with an RBI single. Maxey singled to get on base.
FIU responded first with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and then with five runs in the next inning to take an 8-1 lead. Mandy Hacker, Monica Garcia and Nicole Rodriquez posted RBI’s in the sixth inning to bring NT within four, 8-4. Maxey fouled out to end the rally.
Bostic went 4-for-8 on the day with three RBI. Junior Stephanie Cranmer went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, April 17 when it hosts Middle Tennessee in a four-game conference series. The first pitch is at 1 pm at Denia Park.
