Ragin? Cajuns Come Back To Defeat Mean Green, 3-1

DENTON (4/24/04)- The North Texas softball team scored first, but eighth-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette came back to defeat the Mean Green, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Denia Park.
The Mean Green (16-48, 1-9 Sun Belt Conference) lost the first game of the doubleheader, 3-0. The Ragin’ Cajuns extended their record to 43-6 overall and 9-0 in conference play.
North Texas outhit Louisiana-Lafayette, 11-5, and left 12 runners stranded on base in the 3-1 loss. Five Mean Green players posted multi-hit games in the nightcap.
Sophomore Raci Burnett, in her second start of the season, took the loss in the second game, allowing two runs on three hits in five-plus innings.
The Mean Green took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning of the second game. Sophomore Kelei Walker ran out a bunt for her first hit of the day. Junior Stephanie Cranmer singled to left field and then advanced to second on the muffled throw from the outfield. Walker scored the unearned run on the play.
Ashley Evans homered in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Ragin’ Cajuns posted two runs on three hits in the sixth inning to take the lead.
Junior pitcher Mandy Hacker was the losing pitcher in the first game despite allowing only three hits in the 3-0 decision. Only one of the three runs was earned. Hacker walked five and struck out five Ragin’ Cajuns.
Freshman Heather Bostic led the Mean Green offense with three hits in the combined two games.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, April 25 when it faces eighth-ranked UL Lafayette in a doubleheader at Denia Park. The first pitch has been moved up to noon.
