Mean Green Splits Doubleheader With Aggies

LAS CRUCES, NM (5/1/04) - The North Texas softball team snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 4-2 conference win against New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.
The Mean Green (17-53, 2-12) won its second Sun Belt conference game after losing the first half of the doubleheader, 6-4. With the win, New Mexico State (10-42, 1-12) secured its first conference victory of the season.
Sophomore Kelei Walker posted an extra-base hit in each of the two games and recorded three RBI in the doubleheader.
Freshman Katy Maxey (12-32) earned the win after relieving junior pitcher Mandy Hacker in the second inning. Maxey held the Aggies scoreless, allowing only four hits in five innings of work.
Freshman Monica Garcia jump started the Mean Green offense in the second game, knocking in the first run with an RBI double down the left field line in the top of the second inning. Freshman Heather Bostic scored on the play to give North Texas an early 1-0 lead after reaching on an Aggie error.
The Aggies came back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs off three singles and two walks. North Texas scored two runs, both unearned, in the team’s next at bat to retake the lead, 3-2. Freshman Christen Jonse reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Jonse scored after NMSU’s third baseman threw away Maxey’s hit ball. Maxey, who reached third on the error, scored the game-leading run after junior Stephanie Cranmer grounded out to the second baseman.
North Texas tacked on a fourth run in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI double by Walker. Maxey scored after getting on base with a single. Walker was called out after trying to stretch the double into a three-base hit.
New Mexico State was able to stay one-run ahead of the Mean Green after scoring four early runs in the first inning of the first game. NT engineered three runs to come within one run, 4-3, in the third inning. Walker knocked in two runs with a triple, and Cranmer followed with an RBI double.
The Aggies scored two key runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to three, 6-3. Freshman Susan Waters hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season in the top of the sixth to make it 6-4. New Mexico State allowed only two NT hits in the last fourth innings.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, May 2 when it completes its four-game series with New Mexico State. The first pitch is at 1 pm in Las Cruces, NM.
