Top-Seeded Louisiana-Lafayette Defeats NT, 7-0

LAFAYETTE, LA - The North Texas softball team lost to top-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette, 7-0, in the second day of action at the Sun Belt Conference tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Mean Green’s second game of the tournament was orginally scheduled for Thursday night but was postponed due to rain and lightning. After another rain delay on Friday morning, the game finally began at 11:30 am. With the win, Louisiana-Lafayette (53-6) plays No. 2 FIU in semifinal action at 7 pm.
Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year Brooke Mitchell earned her 39rd win of the year with 11 strikeouts in six innings of work. Sophomore Raci Burnett (0-4) took the loss for North Texas, allowing two runs in one inning of work.
The Ragin’ Cajuns took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off one hit and one Mean Green error. UL Lafayette threatened again in the second, loading the bases with no outs on the board. A groundball was hit to third baseman Susan Waters, who started a 523 double play. A groundout to the second baseman Ana Vega ended the inning.
The Mean Green’s first scoring opportunity came in the third inning after freshman Katy Maxey reached on an error with two outs. Sophomore Kelei Walker posted the first hit for North Texas, beating out an infield throw. Mitchell forced Stephanie Cranmer to foul out to the catcher to end the inning. Walker had two of NT’s three hits.
Brittany Bryant hit a three-run homer in the fourth off junior pitcher Mandy Hacker to extend the Ragin’ Cajuns lead to 5-0. ULL added two more runs in the sixth off a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
North Texas (22-56) will face sixth-seeded New Mexico State in an elimination game at 4:30 pm. The Mean Green holds a 3-1 advantage in the series against the Aggies.
